In America, 15.3 million households move annually. Sixty percent of those moves occur during the summer, making it the peak moving season. If you’re planning to relocate in the next few months, we’ve got some tips to help you plan and organize for success.

Book A Mover Early

Most movers are fully booked from June through August, so it’s important to book your mover now. Having a professional moving company you can rely on takes away a significant amount of the stress that comes with moving. In a survey by OnePoll, 45% of respondents said moving was the most stressful thing they’d ever done. Of that group, 43%, who moved on their own, said they would never do it again.

Pack Ahead

Moving day is jam-packed with activity. To make it more efficient, pack your lesser-used items ahead of time. Things like holiday decorations, winter clothes, family knickknacks and other non-essentials can be packed a few weeks prior to the move. If you plan to have a transition period, you can move these items into storage until you’re ready for them.

Tip: If there are items you don’t plan to take with you, you can host a garage sale or donate them. If there’s food in your pantry that you don’t want to move, we can pick it up and deliver it to local food banks. We do this in partnership with Move for Hunger, a nonprofit that feeds thousands of hungry and vulnerable people each year.

Prepare for the Heat… and Traffic

One of the things people love the most about the summer is the warm weather. Unfortunately, it’s also one of the things that can make your move uncomfortable. Make sure to consider the heat when planning a summer move.

  • Try to start the moving day early (before the heat sets in).

  • Have lots of water for hydration.

  • Avoid packing heat-sensitive items on the moving truck (i.e., candles, electronics like laptops or TVs, or expensive artwork).

At this time of year, many people choose to go on vacation/road trips, so you may encounter traffic. Make sure to factor this into your moving-day plans.

Consider the Little Ones

If you’re moving with kids, pets or both, make sure that you take their needs into consideration, too. Moving tends to feel much longer for them. Plan activities to keep them occupied and include a few pit stops along the way so they can stretch their legs and take a bathroom break.
